Sleep is getting better due mainly, I think, to using sleep sounds to help me fall asleep. I’m using a free app called Medito for this. There are several other apps out there but they all want me to pay for a subscription. I haven’t read up on why sleep sounds help, how to measure its effectiveness, or what sounds and music work better than others, but it does seem to help. I did wake up for a period because I had an attack of proctalgia fugax that lasted for about half an hour. Not quite as intense as other episodes, but painful nonetheless, and made me squirm. I can’t tell what triggered it: maybe stress, lying in bed so much, dehydration, or maybe the bratwurst I had for supper last night.
I was feeling kind of crappy on Sunday following the late evening MRI at MGH Waltham. I’m so glad I’ve gotten Doctor Spinelli to approve the handicap placard before all of this happened. We get all the good parking spots! I took a Valium as soon as I checked in, I suppose it kicked in, but honestly I don’t think it helped me much. The procedure was a bit shorter than the last one, but not by much. We got there around 7:30 PM and left a bit more than two hours later.
Tom came by to see me in the afternoon and I perked up a bit. He and Karen had recently got back from a safari with OAT, taking in Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. He had a lot of pictures of lions, hippos, giraffes, elephants, jackals, hyenas, and so on. This might be the trip Maureen and I do after I’m back on my feet. Tom and I chatted for a couple of hours. It was really good to see him. He’s the only one from the last few years of Volpe that I’ve kept in contact with since I retired.
Yesterday was a slow day, but I did draft and post a review of the book I just finished: “Gardens.” I stayed upstairs all day.
Had a call this morning with Alex, the anesthesiologist that will be at my surgery, and we went over medications and other safety questions. It turns out that they are starting with my right leg after all, and that the second surgery on the left is provisionally booked for June 15th. The surgery for the 11th is booked for four hours! Alex did not know when the surgery was and suggested I message SLC’s team, so I did. Kelsey called me right back. We need to be there by 9:00 AM, meaning that we’ll need to leave Stow by 7:00 AM because of the traffic.
After that I came downstairs to sit in the recliner in the front room. It’s comfortable down here. I put in an order for an Aura 5 for Maureen. Hope she doesn’t notice the credit card charge right away, as then I’ll need to explain. I’d previously texted Miranda about this and she chipped in $300 – totally unexpected, but I’m sure she wants it to be from both of us.
I’m listening to RUR by Karel Čapek on Audible. I’m interested in what this play can tells us about AI. A couple of things: Robots have no soul and robots sometimes get something called ‘Robot Cramp.’ Domin, the manager, calls it a “Flaw in the works.” I plan to write more about RUR in a book review.
I moved to the family room and tried to install Fox TV (for the World Cup, obviously, not the “news”) and HBO on the laptop. I can get these on the phone because we get them from Verizon. Apparently that doesn’t count for Windows laptops. I called up Verizon, and spent over an hour trying to get them to fix it, only for them to say it wasn’t going to work. And of course they tried to upsell me!!!
Watched John Stewart. He had Jane Fonda (she’s 88!) as a guest who was promoting an upcoming concert “Rise Up and Sing out.” They showed the URL, so I went there to register, and wouldn’t you know it, somebody had spoofed the site and it installed a virus on my laptop. Spent an hour with Microsoft to check that my account had not been hacked and to find out how to fix it.
